Opportunity of the Week – Spells Writing Lab

Sophomores and Juniors (or, in this case, rising Juniors and rising Seniors), are you still looking for internship and volunteer opportunities for your graduation project? Well, as promised, I have some leads for you. Each week I’ll feature a different opportunity in the area for some interesting experiences.

This week…Spells Writing Lab, a place for mad scientists, villains, and everyone else who wants to play with words. Spells is a non-profit organization in Philadelphia that offers writing camps to students from ages 7 through 16. During the summer, they host several one week writing camps. From everything I’ve heard, they are tons of fun. It’s not just a lot of sitting around during the day writing and revising. It’s field trips throughout the city. Video making. Using mad scientist equipment to improve writing. And really, really creative and fun kids.

Spells does offer internships for high school students, in both the writing program and design positions. You can find information about those here. They also have regular volunteer positions.

Some of you met Miss Liz (Elizabeth Encarnacion) during career day. She was the book editor. When she’s not producing awesome picture book versions of The Nutcracker and The Velveteen Rabbit, she works with Spells. She got me involved a bit last year. And really, any place that includes in the skills section of the application, “Occasional flights of fancy” and “Knowledge of DragonballZ” is probably a fun place to spend some time.

If you have any questions about Spells, please let me know and I’ll answer what I can or put you in touch with Miss Liz.
