Today’s book isn’t really a new book. It’s been in the library for a while, but I feel like it needs to be rediscovered, and since I have something else in mind for Classic Book Friday this week, and in honor of the second night of Hanukah I thought I’d dust this one off.
Micol and David Ostow’s So Punk Rock (And Other Ways to Disappoint Your Mother) tells the story of Ari Abramson’s attempt to be cool. He recruits fellow classmates at his private Jewish school to start a band called, of course, The Tribe. They hit it big after performing a ska version of “Hava Nagilah” at a friend’s Bar Mitzvah. But popularity is hard, and they become vulnerable to all of the things that bring down successful bands.
While the story is told mostly in narrative, there are comics interspersed that feature the key players, provide background, and highlight big events.
Definitely worth checking out. And expect to see the author’s newest book featured after winter break.
