Classic Book Friday – Alien Edition

Apparently I’m all about the aliens this holiday season. My perennial favorite to recommend around the time of winter break, The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex. In this book, Earth is invaded on Christmas Eve by aliens called the Boov. They rename Earth “Smekland” and rename Christmas “Smekday” in honor of their beloved leader. The main character, Gratuity (nickname: Tip) tells her story of fleeing the aliens and trying to stop another invasion, her friendship with a renegade Boov called J.Lo. She’s accompanied in her journey by her cat, who is awesome.
And, as it turns out, The True Meaning of Smekday has been made into a movie that is to be released in March. The movie is actually titled Home. And it looks like J.Lo has been renamed (although Jennifer Lopez does provide a voice). The misfit Boov is voiced by Jim Parsons, Sheldon from Big Bang Theory. Looks like it could be pretty good. Here’s the movie trailer.
