Today’s first book is an upper school book, Going Bovine by Libba Bray, winner of the Printz Award for best YA fiction in 2010. The premise of the story is that Cam has been diagnosed with Mad Cow Disease and goes on a quest to find a cure. He has two faithful companions: Gonzo, a death obsessed, video-gaming dwarf and a garden gnome who may be a Norse god. It’s a crazy story; a modern version of Don Quixote; and a lot of fun. Here’s an interview with Libba Bray from when the book came out.
For the middle school today, from the man who gave us Wicked, the Wicked Witch of the West’s version of events with a certain Kansas girl and her little dog, comes What-the-Dickens. Three siblings are stuck in their house with their older cousin when a major storm hits, leaving them without electricity or phones and running low on food. To keep the kids distracted from their circumstances, the cousin tells about the time he encountered a rogue tooth fairy. Needless to say, everything you think you know about “the tooth fairy” is wrong! Here’s an interview with Gregory Maguire.
